Google Shopping is usually the highest-ROI paid channel for product ecommerce - and it runs entirely on the quality of your product feed. The feed is not a set-and-forget export: it is a living data pipeline where attribute gaps and stale prices directly cost money. Here is how to build a solid one from Magento 2.
Feed Generation Options
- Extension: the common route - Mageworx, Amasty, Wyomind and others generate scheduled XML/CSV feeds with mapping UIs. Fast to start, fine for most stores
- Google’s own Content API integration via extension: pushes products through the API instead of a file - faster updates, better for volatile pricing and stock
- Custom feed: a CLI command generating XML from the product collection. Full control; justified by unusual attribute logic or multi-market complexity
For most merchants: a good extension with scheduled generation (hourly if prices or stock move fast, daily otherwise) plus Google’s automatic item updates as a safety net.
The Attributes That Decide Approval
Required and worth care:
- id: use SKU - stable, unique, matches your other systems
- title: front-load the words shoppers search - brand + product type + key attributes (“Nike Air Max 90 Trainers White”), not internal naming
- description: real copy, not meta descriptions
- link / image_link: canonical product URL and a clean high-res image (no watermarks, no promotional text - Google’s image rules reject these)
- price: must match the landing page price including sale pricing - mismatches are the top disapproval cause
- availability: accurate to your sync frequency
- gtin / brand / mpn: GTINs matter most - products with valid GTINs outperform those without measurably. Two of (brand, mpn, gtin) are required where GTIN is absent
- google_product_category: map your categories to Google’s taxonomy - tedious once, permanent benefit
Merchant Center Diagnostics Is Your Dashboard
After the first fetch, Merchant Center’s Diagnostics tab grades every item. The workflow: fix disapprovals first (they remove products from auction), then warnings (they limit performance). Common Magento-specific issues: price mismatches after promotions start, missing GTINs on supplier data, image URLs returning 403 because of hotlink protection.
Feed Quality Is Bid Quality
Shopping has no keywords - Google matches queries from your feed content. Rich, accurate titles and complete attributes are your targeting. The stores that win Shopping treat the feed as merchandising: custom labels for margin tiers (so bids can follow profit), seasonal labels, and title tests measured in Merchant Center’s performance data.
Set the pipeline up properly - clean attributes, honest prices, hourly freshness - then iterate titles and labels monthly against performance. That loop, not any bid strategy, is where Shopping campaigns are won.
